Thangu Valley is a charming village near Lachen, en route to Gurudongmar Lake. Nestled amidst the Alpine mountains at an elevation of 3962m, this serene hamlet captivates visitors with its quaint wooden and stone houses, serving as delightful eateries for passing tourists. Thangu offers a respite from the bustling city life, exuding a laid-back atmosphere. The cozy houses, still embracing traditional cooking methods and daily routines, often boast kitchen gardens and sheds. Due to its proximity to the army base, this area maintains high surveillance, resulting in photography restrictions. Expect to spot army personnel going about their tasks. Thangu serves as an ideal stopover, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of the mountains up close.
Within Thangu’s embrace lie the Teesta, Chopta, Thangu, and Lassur rivers, gracefully meandering through meadows. Their glistening waters create a mesmerizing spectacle. As you ascend in altitude, the vegetation diminishes, revealing glimpses of the Tibetan plateau with its sparse greenery.
Thangu at a high altitude, is mostly snow-covered year-round. Only during the summer months does the snow melt, opening up the valley. The best time to visit is May-June when the valley blooms with Alpine flowers.
Thangu, located 30km north of Lachen, can be easily reached by taxis. It is well-connected by road to major cities such as Gangtok, Pelling, as well as the Bagdogra airport and New Jalpaiguri Railway station.
Thangu Valley not only offers breathtaking views but also serves as an excellent destination for short treks. Trekking through the mountainous routes allows you to explore the essence of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Popular trekking sites include Chopta Valley, Green Lake, and Muguthang. It’s essential to bring your own trekking gear as there are no shops selling equipment in Thangu.
