Accessible by road from Gangtok, which is approximately 120km away.Lachung exudes an old-world charm. Its wooden houses, surrounded by quaint kitchen gardens and winding roads, along with picturesque stepped grassy fields and ambling cows, create a scene straight out of a classic tale. Amidst this timeless setting, you can still enjoy modern connectivity with your smartphone, a delightful blend of past and present.
Experience breathtaking views of snow mountain peaks in Lachung all year round. The mountain routes are adorned with picturesque waterfalls. During winter the region gets covered in snow. Plan your visit in summer or autumn to avoid the monsoon season, which may lead to landslides, and winter when some routes are closed due to snowfall.
To visit Lachung, near the China border, a special permit is required. You must apply for this permit one day in advance through a travel agent in Gangtok. Make sure to carry all necessary documents and passport size photographs during your travel, as they are essential for obtaining the permit. Lachung is not easily accessible by public transport. so it’s recommended to book your journey with a reliable travel agent. The mountain roads vary in quality, with some sections being excellent and others being bumpy. Therefore, it’s crucial to book a reliable SUV for a comfortable commute.
Please note that the entire route to Lachung is lined with military bases, where photography is strictly prohibited. Additionally, extended stops without a valid reason are not allowed. Multiple checks for the travel permit are conducted along the route before entering Lachung.
The ideal way to experience Lachung is on foot. Taking a leisurely stroll through the town allows you to rejuvenate while breathing in the clean mountain air. Don’t forget to make a stop at cozy eateries housed in huts, where you can savor authentic home-cooked Sikkimese cuisine to enhance your overall experience.
Lachung Gompa, situated atop a hillock near Lachung, is a serene Buddhist place of worship. For a more immersive experience of the hills, you can also choose to walk up to the Gompa.Located approximately 30km from Lachung, Mount Katao is a breathtaking Himalayan mountain.
However, the real visual delight awaits you at the Yumthang Valley of Flowers, which is about 25km away from Lachung. During the flowering season, the valley becomes a vibrant tapestry of colors, boasting a wide variety of flowers. Beyond the valley lies Zero Point or Yumesadong, an additional 25km from Yumthang. The route to Zero Point is perfumed with the delightful fragrance of Azellia, a signature scent in every Sikkimese household. Zero Point experiences snowfall throughout the year, offering a striking transition from the rainbow hues of the flower valley to the pristine white snowscape.
