Jorethang a town in south Sikkim, is situated along the Rangeet River, a tributary of the Teesta River. With a higher literacy rate than the Sikkim average, Jorethang is unique. The majority of its population around 9,000-10,000, is young. Located at an altitude of 300m in the Himalayan foothills, Jorethang stands out among Sikkim towns.
Jorethang has a pleasant temperate climate throughout the year. The summer months from March to June are considered the best time to visit, although other seasons are also enjoyable.
Jorethang has excellent road connectivity to major cities and towns in Sikkim. The closest airport is Bagdogra Airport, while the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station. From either the airport or the railway station, one can easily hire a taxi to Jorethang. Alternatively, one can reach Gangtok and then hire a taxi to Jorethang. The distance between Jorethang and the capital city of Gangtok is approximately 85km when traveling via NH10.
Jorethang is well-known for the Maghe Mela, an annual cultural festival held in January. This vibrant event coincides with Makar Sankranti, the transition of the Sun into Capricorn. The festival showcases a variety of cultural dances from different parts of Sikkim. Visitors can explore stalls offering diverse traditional crafts and artworks, while enjoying various cultural activities on a grand scale. The festival features exciting events such as dance contests, para-gliding and hot air balloon shows, a beauty pageant, the Jorethang marathon, and more. In addition to its cultural significance, the festival also incorporates elements of an agricultural fair. Since its inception in 1955, the festival has evolved to include modern entertainment, catering to the large crowds it attracts.
